80 CE

A year marked by the grand inauguration of the Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum, one of the most iconic structures of the ancient world, alongside continued disaster recovery from the eruption of Vesuvius the previous year.

Architecture & Spectacle

  • Emperor Titus inaugurated the Flavian Amphitheatre with approximately one hundred days of games, including gladiatorial combat, animal hunts, and mock naval battles, drawing spectators from across the empire.
  • The Colosseum, which could seat an estimated 50,000 spectators, was the largest amphitheatre ever built and represented a monumental feat of Roman engineering and construction.
  • The building had been commissioned by Titus's father Vespasian around 70 CE on the site of Nero's former private lake, symbolically returning the land to public use.

Disaster & Recovery

  • A major fire struck Rome, causing significant damage to parts of the city, though its scale was less catastrophic than the Great Fire of 64 CE.

Climate & Environment

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration was approximately 278 parts per million, as later confirmed by ice core analysis.

Society & Population

  • The global population is estimated to have been approximately 254 million.
