751 CE

A pivotal year in which the Battle of Talas between Arab and Tang Chinese forces reshaped Central Asian geopolitics and facilitated the westward spread of papermaking technology.

Conflict & Diplomacy

  • The Battle of Talas in July pitted Abbasid Arab forces and their Karluk Turkic allies against the Tang Chinese army under the Korean general Gao Xianzhi near the Talas River in present-day Kyrgyzstan. The decisive Arab victory ended Chinese westward expansion into Central Asia.
  • Among the Chinese prisoners captured at Talas were skilled papermakers, whose knowledge was transmitted to the Islamic world, eventually revolutionizing record-keeping and scholarship across the Middle East and later Europe.

Politics & Power

  • The Abbasid Caliphate, having overthrown the Umayyads in 750, was consolidating its control over the vast Islamic empire from its new power base in the eastern provinces.
  • The Tang dynasty in China, though defeated at Talas, remained one of the world's great powers, but internal tensions including the forthcoming An Lushan Rebellion were beginning to strain the empire.

Climate & Environment

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration was approximately 276 parts per million, as later confirmed by ice core analysis.

Population & Demographics

  • World population is estimated to have been approximately 240 million, with the largest concentrations in China, the Indian subcontinent, and the Islamic world.
