431 CE

A year of significant theological definition as the Council of Ephesus, the third ecumenical council, condemned the teachings of Nestorius and affirmed Mary as Theotokos, the Mother of God.

Religion & Theology

  • The Council of Ephesus was convened by Emperor Theodosius II beginning on June 22, bringing together over 200 bishops to resolve the theological dispute over the relationship between the divine and human natures of Christ.
  • The council condemned the teachings of Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had objected to calling Mary Theotokos (God-bearer or Mother of God), arguing instead that she should be called Christotokos (Mother of Christ).
  • Cyril of Alexandria led the opposition to Nestorius and dominated the council proceedings, which affirmed that Christ was a single person with both divine and human natures united from the moment of incarnation.
  • Nestorius was deposed and exiled, but his followers would go on to form the Church of the East, which spread Christianity across Persia, Central Asia, and eventually as far as China.

Geopolitics & Governance

  • The western Roman Empire continued to weaken as Germanic kingdoms consolidated their control over former Roman provinces in Gaul, Spain, and North Africa.
  • The Vandals under Gaiseric were campaigning across Roman North Africa, having crossed from Spain in 429, and were pressing toward the vital city of Carthage and its grain supplies.

Culture & Society

  • The world population was approximately 210 million.

Climate & Environment

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration was approximately 278 parts per million, as later confirmed by ice core analysis.
