A year defined by the Sicilian Vespers uprising against French Angevin rule, which reshaped the political landscape of the Mediterranean, and the beginning of Edward I's conquest of Wales.

Conflict & Security

  • The Sicilian Vespers erupted on March 30 as the people of Palermo rose in a violent rebellion against the French Angevin rulers, massacring thousands of French soldiers and civilians across the island.
  • The uprising quickly spread across all of Sicily, with the population systematically killing French inhabitants and rejecting the rule of Charles of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily.
  • Peter III of Aragon invaded Sicily in August at the invitation of the rebels, claiming the island through his wife Constance, daughter of the last Hohenstaufen king, and establishing Aragonese rule.
  • King Edward I of England launched his second campaign against Wales, responding to a revolt led by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales.
  • Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was killed at the Battle of Orewin Bridge on December 11, effectively ending Welsh independence and opening the way for English annexation of the principality.
