1014 CE

A year marked by decisive battles on two fronts of Christendom: Brian Boru's victory and death at the Battle of Clontarf in Ireland, and the Byzantine Emperor Basil II's devastating defeat of the Bulgarian army at the Battle of Kleidion.

Conflict & Power

  • The Battle of Clontarf on April 23 pitted the forces of Irish High King Brian Boru against a coalition of Norse-Irish allies led by the King of Leinster. Brian's side won decisively, but the elderly king was killed in his tent after the battle, ending his dynasty's grip on Irish high kingship.
  • Byzantine Emperor Basil II crushed the Bulgarian army at the Battle of Kleidion in July. According to later accounts, he blinded as many as 15,000 Bulgarian prisoners, sending them home in groups led by one-eyed guides, earning him the epithet Bulgaroktonos, the Bulgar-Slayer.
  • The Bulgarian Tsar Samuel reportedly died of shock upon seeing his blinded soldiers return, effectively ending organized Bulgarian resistance to Byzantine expansion in the Balkans.

Religion & Governance

  • Sweyn Forkbeard, King of Denmark, had conquered England in late 1013, but died on February 3, 1014, leading to a power struggle between his son Cnut and the returning English king Ethelred the Unready.
  • Ethelred the Unready returned from exile in Normandy to reclaim the English throne after Sweyn's death, as the English nobility conditionally accepted him back.

Climate & Environment

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration was approximately 275 parts per million, as later confirmed by ice core analysis.

Population & Demographics

  • World population is estimated to have been approximately 311 million.
